Demos on Play and the Public Realm

Nice job from Demos on a number of counts. This is good use of online social media – (this film appears on Youtube and their blog so you can watch it, comment on it and share it – hence social media) and a neat summary of the problem of children no longer feeling safe or welcome to play in public spaces. The film is well made by Adam, their audio visual intern. Does your organisation have such a thing? If not – should it?

  1. Dear Nick
Allied to the film about children’s play by Demos is the general safety of our streets because of motorised traffic.

I made it two years ago. The situation along Edgbaston Park Road hasn’t improved in the slightest I’m afraid. I cycle regularly to and from work on this road as you know and I find some drivers selfish and dangerous even in full daylight. I saw a cyclist last week cycling on the pavement ringing his bell at students walking in front of him, but when I had a word with him he pointed to the speeding road traffic (but agreed he should defer to walkers on the pavement). I’ve sent the URL of this video to Edgbaston Ward councillors but I’m not hopeful of anything being done. Best, Simon
