When I was a child it was common to see the ‘closed for lunch’ sign on shop doors. Now they are very rare. Customers expect you to be open.
Online we are always open – aren’t we? A friend of mine pointed out a sign on the moderated BBC Religion and Ethics message board which says:
Opening times
Mon – Fri 09.00 – 18.00
Sat – Sun 10.00 – 17.00
Dumbstruck.
Then again, how free is free speech which is moderated so closely, and can only be posted after it’s conformed to “house rules” – that’s before you get to the opening hours issue. You have to “prove yourself safe” before you can leave an unmoderated post on the BBC religion message boards.
