I told you so….

As you might gather I’m keen to see lobby groups, charities and the social sector using social media, but tone of voice is everything. I found this film through John Hemmings blog. There’s something about it that troubles me. It follows an Ofsted report highlighting important failings with the court support service CAFCASS.

The video is discordant. The combination of the emotive images (I imagine none of which show actual abuse by cafcass?) and the ‘told you so script’ grates.
So congratulations to Mothers for Justice for having their case supported by Ofsted. But please think again about how you convey your message. It’s now time for action, so tell us what you want to happen or tell us a story which will give legs to the campaign for change. Pressure groups are well placed to tell stories of real people’s real experiences and that’s where the emotional impact should be found when using social media.

Bearded trim?

Gareth at Bearded wanted to join the Birmingham Bloggers meeting last night but couldn’t because of something to do with print, publishing, stress and hair loss. He’d love to know what we make of the Bearded blog – an honest critique is where he would like us to start.

My twopennorth is suggesting you link more to other blogs within posts. Get a touch more eclectic about sources of ideas and inspiration. Don’t think of it as another way of sharing content, but instead as a way of rooting Bearded into a wider local and global network of writers, thinkers and fine folk. One other thing, find a charity to support, connect into the social network that builds around a cause that really makes sense to you. The time you spend supporting that cause will have a happy by-product of creating support for your brand – but be sincere about the choice you make.

Podcasts worth $165 million in the USA

podcast dollars pounds incomeTechcrunch has some guestimates from eMarketeer that reckon the number of active podcast consumers in America was 6.5 million last year (who yielded advertising worth $165 million) and will grow to 25 milion in 2012. Now the bold use of future numbers (licked finger in air) is why I’ve always struggled with a business plan (what are your predictions of tunrover/profit in 3 years and 5 years – how the b***ocks should I know!?).

I’m interested that last year 18.5 million Americans listened to a podcast and a more importantly one third of those remained active listeners. One of the reasons for this is the ease with which podcast can be found and consumed. I’ve already speculated on this and know there is a real appetite for the right niche content, so based on these numbers perhaps I should refine the planning. But I wont be paying eMarketeer $695 for the full report. Now if they bothered to present it in audio or video….
