[...] I used very simple examples. I was facing an audience of 100 people, none of whom blog, only one had heard of twitter. Even though I was amongst many lawyers only a smattering had come across Linkedin. I needed to show how building networks of trust can help make good things happen. I used the example of the Birmingham Bloggers group and the Social Media Surgeries. I used the volunteer effort that mysociety can apply to ventures like fixmystreet (and not a soul in the room had heard of the site). I also talked to them about the open innovation exchange experiment and how it’s model of open collaboration to pitch for contracts is using trust to disrupt existing ways of doing business and improve the outcome for the public. Responses were mixed. Some went for the very human (my favourites) such as getting good at saying sorry, takings flowers when you’ve messed and having street meeting with contractors. Others talked specifically about procedures and software to track transactions. One reported how law firms use facebook to recruit people for court cases. [...]

[...] Nick Booth posted in advance of the event here but the reality must have far exceeded his expectations. I arrived 15 minutes late to find the scene in the pic above - several people crowded round each ‘expert’ with some serious learning going on (on both sides).
[...] And one of the pleasant surprises this year has been the emphasis that bloggers are placing on the action part of Blog Action Day. (Try a Google Blog Search on “blog action day” to see what I mean.)From Skelliewag’s suggestions of 30 Simple Ways to Battle Poverty with Technology for Internet users, to the group of Podnosh bloggers who offered free one-on-one social media tutoring to voluntary and community groups in their home city, to an international Design for Poverty Contest at Yanko Design web magazine — the sheer variety of initiatives is inspiring. [...]

Sadly I won't be able to make it today; I am joining in though, here at the Citizenship Foundation (http://tinyurl.com/3jnvur).

I hope it goes well. Best of luck. :-)

[...] The Social Media Club in Austin, Texas have been busy raising awareness of Poverty situations in their community and this evening I will be joining the BrumBloggers at their “Surgery” to help voluntary and community organisations in Birmingham use Social Media, (blogs, flickr, facebook etc.) in their outreach to the community causes.
Not sure if there'll be any need for a social media architect, but I thought I might come along for an hour or so to meet a few folks. I'll have to be away by 7pm but should be able to get there in good time for the start.
